And another... (WRVU 91 Rock)

And another.

So, you're thinking, did I go to college with this guy? Was he a WRVU DJ? Nope - My only connection to 91 Rock is that I lived in Murfreesboro for a couple years back in 1986. I had just moved from the Washington DC area where I listened to the infamous WHFS 99.1 radio station. WRVU was a welcome to what I thought would be sad ears living in the country music capital of the world. I rented a stereo and hit the record button and that's what you have here. Over 25 years later I digitized the recordings and now getting them online.

Leave a comment if you will and say hi. Do you have a great memory of WRVU, put it here!

More WRVU 91 Rock station breaks

Really great alternative set by John Lanka. An awesome WRVU air check by Ranking Roger of General Public (among other bands).

If they can revive WRVU as WXNA, we'll all be happy. And for those of you not living in the Nashville area, no problem, they'll be worldwide via the Internet. Check out their funding page at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wxna-lpga/x-plosive-radio-wxna-lpfm-nashville

WRVU - 91 Rock's DJ John Lanka

John Lanka, a WRVU, 91 Rock DJ (Vanderbilt studio radio) had a rough start to his shift. Recorded off the radio around 1986/7 when I lived in Murfreesboro, TN. WRVU is attempting a comeback and needs your support - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wxna-lpga/x-plosive-radio-wxna-lpfm-nashville

Leave a comment and say hi! I'll parse through some more of the tapes and post them when I can.

DC 101's Local Lix with DJ Cerphe

I must have switched over from the Graham Dene to DC 101 and caught 12 minutes or so Local Lix with DJ Cerphe. I'm often attempting to connect with people I hear on the recordings while digitizing them, like contest winners, callers, or in this case a Manassas, VA local whose song was played on the radio and reunite them with their 15 seconds of fame.

Cerphe recapped two songs and introduced another. One by a local band in Largo, MD named the Sunday's and the other, John Yankoviak from Manassas, VA. Wouldn't know it but there is a John Yankoviak still in Manassas and I've reached out to him, let's see if I found the right one. I honestly believe I remember playing this song back then and really really liking it. I bet I played this cassette often. So, fast forward 25 plus years, I hear it again.

The recording has that typical warble in parts of the tape.

Does anyone remember any of these three bands? Are any of you out there? Say hello if your here.

Thomas Grooms - local Washington DC DJ Blues Room set

While digitizing tapes today, I found one labeled Blues Room Aug 02 complete with Thomas Grooms station breaks. The 0 on the tape is circled a couple times; when listening to the tape, the commercials talk about 1992 so the assumption is the recording is in fact from Aug. 1992. This is the one and only recording of this type that I have from 105.9 WCXR. There are several DJ breaks along with vintage commercials.

By the way, listen to the entire recording, even if you have to come back, it's that good!

Please leave a comment with a memory about Thomas Grooms or just say hi!

Before I upload the recording, here's an interview I found on YouTube with Thomas Grooms and Randy California.
