I'm back!

Yesterday I revealed myself abruptly after more than a year behind the curtain. Well, behind the curtain would infer that I was working on and retooling this site for a grand re-opening. That was obviously not the case. What simply happened is I recently found the DC Scene 80's & 90's group on FB and uploaded an old You Tube :21 clip of Weasel. Well, that got my mojo going a bit. Then, when looking at an external drive that I don't connect much, I saw a folder labeled WHFS_digital_music. Well, I knew what this was and after scanning some of the titles, yesterday's post was born, abruptly.

So I edited the recording in WMM (Windows Movie Maker) then uploaded it to You Tube and then linked it to this blog. I liked how it looked, but I didn't like the related videos it showed after it played. Having a three year old in the house that uses my iPad often, I really hate how You Tube serves those related videos. Some are really not related at all except for the key words someone used to deceive.

What frustrated me was in the HTML design area on blogger.com, there's no uplink video option so I thought they changed and required you to link from another source rather than directly upload it. Well, a day later and a few clicks I found the video uploaded and decided to see if going directly from my computer to blogger.com worked, it did! So now I'll be posting Window's Media files directly to www.naplesgc.blogspot.com and we can rejoice there will be no "related" videos that appear after listening.

One more issue before we get to the next clip. This site is full of links to Megaupload and streaming links to eclips, both are dead now. For kicks, click on one of the download links, you'll see this:
FBI Anti-Piracy Warning
So with this stern warning from the government, I will not be posting any downloadable content, just either streaming or uploaded content that can't be saved or downloaded. Also, you won't be hearing full length songs, I don't believe. I may have to do some research on that. If there are any sites or information that someone can point me to, please let me know. I would much rather upload an entire rip than have to edit out the music. I will say, if you hear a song or a recap of a song and like it and need it, please go to iTunes and buy it, support the bands and makers of the music we love.

So, as this was an afterthought post, I'll make what was going to be my second post, my third post.

Welcome back everyone, I hope your lives have been fulfilled since we have last communicated.

Glenn

As always, please leave a comment what you thought of this post and a memory or two.

WHFS station break with Susan and a Dash-in Dan commercial

From late 1986 or early 1987. Susan starts out great then has a hard time remembering who stars in the movie Something Wild. A classic Dash-in Dan commercial (Dash-in Food Stores). Love the recap set. Radio like never before and never again.

So you may be here and see the other posts and wonder where all the music and clips went. Well, the hosting site was stormed and taken down so all the links are gone. The clips were stored on a site, eclips which seems to be dead, don't try to click on them. This blog was my passion for a while and had a good stream of visitors. Over a two year period I was able to obtain many vintage tape recordings of classic WHFS. I've digitized most them, leaving the tapes with mostly music and few dj's. It's funny to me, while WHFS played awesome music without walls, I love to hear the DJ's identify the music and banter with the thousands of listeners through the airwaves.

Most of what I'll start posting, through up-links to You Tube, will be DJ station breaks, music recaps, period commercials and concert calendars.

So, even with all I have going on, my family, a busy photography schedule and my day job, I'll attempt to upload some clips when I can. My photo site is www.gchristopherphotos.com, check it out.

Feel free to leave a comment here or better yet on the 80's, 90's DC scene music Facebook page.

The year was 1987 and these were the tunes

As perfectly written by Lefty - I thought why retype when I can use my new magic wand that my wife gave me for my birthday. She's glad to see I'm using it for something.

The year was 1987 and these were the tunes Side B

The year was 1987 and these were the tunes Side A

Let's get some comments going on this tape - download and let us know what you think.

WHFS Party Weekend 1990 style and more...

First of the Lefty collection - Thanks Lefty for the run down of songs and description of what we have here.

Track 5 (1990) - 7:06
Wild Weekend by The Rockin' Rebels
Until the Weekend by Nick Lowe
Party Weekend by Joe King Carrasco

From Weasel's 1990 afternoon show. This is great since I had already moved to FL when this aired. This is a variation of the Freaky Friday set with the 1963 version of "Wild Weekend" rather than the more common NRBQ version we heard so ofter in earlier years.

Party Weekend 1990 style

Track 1(1983) - 4:28
"Bob's Theme"
Bob used to play these two songs to start his early morning show: a Zydeco song followed by a somewhat Hawaiian-themed acoustic number.

"Lefty" says "I don't know the artists or titles, but would love to find out some day". Well Lefty, hopefully the knowledgeable music heads here on this site can help out.

"Bob's Theme"

Track 2 (1983) - 4:22
Take a walk on the Kosher side by Gefilte Joe and the Fish
Joe Lewis school of Elocution by the Rhino Brothers

This short set is followed up by Weasel

Two odd songs

Please please please, leave comments and thank Lefty for keeping WHFS alive!

More than a year later...

...I have received more WHFS goodies - thanks "Lefty", you know who you are. These were sent to me already dubbed onto CD so I ripped them to the computer today, the day I got them and now will start the posting process.

"Lefty" has done a super job documenting the songs and artists along with the DJ spinning the tunes. Let's give it up for "Lefty" as he's put a lot of work into these few tapes as well as documenting the entire Jeff M collection - stay tuned for that.

Of the two CD's I received today, one is labeled 1987 and the other is 1983 - 1990 odds. The latter contains about 15 minutes of 5 short sets including 7 minutes of Party Weekend while the 1987 CD includes two sides, one 31:28 and the other a solid 43:50 minutes featuring 12 songs from Billy Bragg, the Bo Deans to The Smiths and Violet Femmes. This is going in my car tomorrow without a doubt!

Check out the next post for the first of this set- Party Weekend from 1990.

Enjoy!!!!

WKDU Philadelphia

So, it seems those in Philly had WKDU in the 70s & 80's just as those of us in the DC area had WHFS. I had never heard of this station but from listening to the only tape sent I like what I heard. There's no DJ's on this upload, and as Jeff said, who would have known years later it would have cool to have the DJs, but the music speaks to their non-conformance to pop-top 40 stations.

From Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WKDU

WKDU is an award winning non-commercial college radio station located in Philadelphia, USA, broadcasting on 91.7 FM. It is owned and operated by Drexel University students, with several Drexel alumni among its on-air staff. It is the only free-format non-commercial FM station in Philadelphia.

WKDU's musical format is free-form, meaning that playlists are dictated solely by the taste of the on-air DJs. On an average day, one might hear punk, electronica, indie rock, acid jazz, J-pop or metal.

Jeff comes through with one more tape!

Jeff! Thanks! I got the tape and have already uploaded side A, the WHFS side. What a great tape! Damian recaping, a few cool commericals and great songs.

The second side of the tape is WKDU from Philadelphia - nice tape as well, just music. Will upload later tonight or tomorrow.

I'm heading out now to celebrate my wife Nancy's birthday - going to Carraba's Itailian Grill.

Saved the best for last!

Attention - false report of last tape found! The Fat Lady has now sung! And the best seemed to have been left for last! What a tape from 102.3; great songs and great DJ music recaps. Tape 1 side A is from late 1982 and includes XTC, Lina Lovich, U2, The Fixx, Garland Jeffreys, Iggy Pop, B-52's, X, The Kinks and English Beat. This is an afternoon drive time set according to the DJ, the time was after 3PM. Tape 1 side A

Crazy to think we are ending this 14 tape set with tape 1; how unconventional can we get? Well, since we are talking WHFS- it's fitting, eh?

Friday - Christmas Eve 1982, just before 5PM. The Roxy Music, The Reindeers, Elvis Costello after hard cut we get Sarah on Saturday - Susie and the Banshees, The Undertones, Jaleeb then a great music recap leads to The English Beat, Psychedelic Furs, and XTC to fade.

Now, closing sentiments please.

Lost Jeff Tape found!

Headline news reports that a lost Jeff collection tape has been found and recently uploaded to the Internet via naplesgc.blogspot.com. This recent finding was actually just reported on but turns out was discovered and uploaded to a anti-room at megaupload.com back on July 22 of 2010. This 94.5 MB file is sure to stir some buzz in the WHFS world. This tape is part of a 14 tape find by Jeff of No. VA and processed and uploaded by Naplesgc - owner and operator of other rare WHFS recordings that reside online at naplesgc.blogspot.com. This tape, which is actually the "B" side of Tape 4 was a "cast off" tape since side A was a non-WHFS recording of a Roxy Music's Manifesto album, according to Naplesgc back when all the tapes were being processed, recorded, converted and uploaded earlier in the year.

The timing of this upload stems in part to the King Daddy of rare music memorabilia, Camarillo Brillo bringing attention to Naplesgc that Tape 6 side B was hanging up at 38% download and he desperately wanted to hear the rest of the Milo Tape 6 set...or as CB said "I really need to hear the 2nd half of Milo's show...
Thanks!!!!"

So, without further ado, get Tape 4 side B here.

Get bonus tape of Roxy Music - Tape 4 side A here.

I guess this means the Fat Lady has sung!
