WKDU Philadelphia

So, it seems those in Philly had WKDU in the 70s & 80's just as those of us in the DC area had WHFS. I had never heard of this station but from listening to the only tape sent I like what I heard. There's no DJ's on this upload, and as Jeff said, who would have known years later it would have cool to have the DJs, but the music speaks to their non-conformance to pop-top 40 stations.

From Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WKDU

WKDU is an award winning non-commercial college radio station located in Philadelphia, USA, broadcasting on 91.7 FM. It is owned and operated by Drexel University students, with several Drexel alumni among its on-air staff. It is the only free-format non-commercial FM station in Philadelphia.

WKDU's musical format is free-form, meaning that playlists are dictated solely by the taste of the on-air DJs. On an average day, one might hear punk, electronica, indie rock, acid jazz, J-pop or metal.

Jeff comes through with one more tape!

Jeff! Thanks! I got the tape and have already uploaded side A, the WHFS side. What a great tape! Damian recaping, a few cool commericals and great songs.

The second side of the tape is WKDU from Philadelphia - nice tape as well, just music. Will upload later tonight or tomorrow.

I'm heading out now to celebrate my wife Nancy's birthday - going to Carraba's Itailian Grill.

Saved the best for last!

Attention - false report of last tape found! The Fat Lady has now sung! And the best seemed to have been left for last! What a tape from 102.3; great songs and great DJ music recaps. Tape 1 side A is from late 1982 and includes XTC, Lina Lovich, U2, The Fixx, Garland Jeffreys, Iggy Pop, B-52's, X, The Kinks and English Beat. This is an afternoon drive time set according to the DJ, the time was after 3PM. Tape 1 side A

Crazy to think we are ending this 14 tape set with tape 1; how unconventional can we get? Well, since we are talking WHFS- it's fitting, eh?

Friday - Christmas Eve 1982, just before 5PM. The Roxy Music, The Reindeers, Elvis Costello after hard cut we get Sarah on Saturday - Susie and the Banshees, The Undertones, Jaleeb then a great music recap leads to The English Beat, Psychedelic Furs, and XTC to fade.

Now, closing sentiments please.

Lost Jeff Tape found!

Headline news reports that a lost Jeff collection tape has been found and recently uploaded to the Internet via naplesgc.blogspot.com. This recent finding was actually just reported on but turns out was discovered and uploaded to a anti-room at megaupload.com back on July 22 of 2010. This 94.5 MB file is sure to stir some buzz in the WHFS world. This tape is part of a 14 tape find by Jeff of No. VA and processed and uploaded by Naplesgc - owner and operator of other rare WHFS recordings that reside online at naplesgc.blogspot.com. This tape, which is actually the "B" side of Tape 4 was a "cast off" tape since side A was a non-WHFS recording of a Roxy Music's Manifesto album, according to Naplesgc back when all the tapes were being processed, recorded, converted and uploaded earlier in the year.

The timing of this upload stems in part to the King Daddy of rare music memorabilia, Camarillo Brillo bringing attention to Naplesgc that Tape 6 side B was hanging up at 38% download and he desperately wanted to hear the rest of the Milo Tape 6 set...or as CB said "I really need to hear the 2nd half of Milo's show...
Thanks!!!!"

So, without further ado, get Tape 4 side B here.

I guess this means the Fat Lady has sung!

And then there was none...

Thanks for the analysis Jugdish it was determined that Tape 7 side B of the Jeff Collection had also not been uploaded. I looked on Megaupload and it had no downloads, so...here it is.

And now there are none...until more are unearthed.

Get yur tape 18 side B here...get yur tape 18 side B here

So jugdish was going through his Jeff collection inventory and determined he was missing Tape 18 Side B...he was right. I checked and never had even recorded it onto my drive.

The tape starts off a little slow for me but picks up as it goes along. Some rare not often recordings are on this tape - Susan spins.

Let me know what you think by leaving a comment - thanks, now officially the Jeff Collection is complete!

And the winner is...

Now that I'm done with the Jeff collection, I've thrown in some of my old tapes that were rejected for some reason when I went through all my tapes over the past two years. I believe I just wanted only full tapes and what I've found now are all mixed up tapes so I thought I'd pull some clips from them and on this particular one, I found a David and David contest winner, Kip Baker of Silver Spring. I hope you don't mind Kip having your name on my blog, let me know if it's a problem.

So, here's the clip to listen to - at 1:58 starts the announcement of Kip Baker winning the contest. Anyone have an idea of the year?

3 months later - almost to the day

...and the chapter ends as it began, with hope, anticipation, joy, memories and any other adjective you and think of to insert personally. On March 12, 2010 I received 14 WHFS tapes from Jeff in Va. Since that time, I have a friend in Jeff and the world has 28 sides of incredible historic memories from the one and only, WHFS. It seems longer than 90 + days ago that I received the package I was waiting for; it took Jeff some time to find a box large enough for the 14 tapes plus I think a trip to South America was planned. So, as you all were waiting for the tapes to be uploaded, for awhile, I was waiting for them to be delivered.

Let's all take this time to thank Jeff for saving these tapes all these years, trusting an Internet shadow with his possession. I am proud to have served him well, as well as hopefully doing justice to the recordings, now safe and sound on the Internet. As you may have recently been made aware of over at Camarillo Brillo; links, websites, subscriptions, servers, etc. are all fallible; so while you can, download, download and download. The more these recordings are preserved on hard drives, iPods, iPads, CDs, flash drives, DVDs, etc. the better we will be and the history of WHFS can be restored and replayed for generations to come.

Okay, a bit deep for some recordings off the radio, but hey, that's why we are here.

Enjoy the last of the Jeff M collection here (Tape 6 side A) and here (Tape 6 Side B) Tape six side b has a new link as of 08.06.10

Signing off for now...but not for good.

Totally 80's

Managed to talk my wife into stopping at the local Goodwill after a very nice lunch at Rib City. She took a siesta with the little one in the car while I went and rummaged. I have a moratorium on buying and because of that was not about to venture into the car with bag full of albums, books, cassettes, etc. So, if I can find time in the next couple of days to make my way back there, I will have to remember where I hid a few treasures. One, was a homemade tape labeled Totally 80's - I was like, I need to have this. So, lets hope the still sealed Anthrax State of Euphoria with the hologram, Naked Eyes and Figures on a Beach albums will still be under the shelving where I hid them when I go back. I should have bought the Totally 80's for the buck as wifey is not so concerned with the money spent as much as the room this stuff takes up. I have a storage full plus a garage full of "stuff" that she wants something done with. For another day...

Speaking of Totally 80's - Here are tapes 15 and 16 - vintage 80's WHFS

These tapes have a file name that includes "102.3" in them but according to the writing on the tape, are from 99.1. (I cut and pasted without looking until after the fact - it's all good though).

Go to this post for a little information on these four tapes -

As always, come back for comments and reviews

Shhhh...I'm quietly uploading tapes

So, with the next few posts, the Jeff collection of 14 WHFS tapes from pre-1985 will be done. All tapes have been ingested, uploaded and awaiting reviews after being downloaded. Once this project is complete, I'll be seeking other vintage WHFS tapes to be sent my way.

Thanks to all who have helped identify the songs on these tapes, teamwork is an awesome thing.

To get the WHFS Jeff Collection Tape 17 Side A, go here (Fixed -Thanks Jugdish).
To get the WHFS Jeff Collection Tape 17 Side B, go here

Some of these tapes file name has 102.3 in them but may be 99.1, as in tape 17 is 99.1.

Three more tapes to add. I will say, these four tapes burned this weekend were very enjoyable, had lots of DJ's recapping the music and may have been overall my favorite four. Some are WHFS from 99.1, maybe that's why.

Always, please leave your comments. Off to Rib City in Naples.

Let's guess the playlist!

Let's play "Let's guess the playlist!"

In my busy life, our four month old baby, work, photography, trips to Disney, etc. I've decided to not hold back these tapes just b/c I don't have time to listen to them and writeup a playlist. From the looks of the thread on the other post while I was in Disney, you all seem to have fun naming the songs and providing that information to others. These tapes were maybe a year or two before my main listening years, although I was def listening in 82-83, just not paying as much attention in the years post high school '83 -'89.

Here is tape 9 both sides A and B. I haven't listened to these since I ripped them and I probably didn't listen to the whole tape.

Let's get some feedback on these tapes.

As always, please come back and leave comments.

Supposed to be cleaning gararge..

So, it's Saturday and since I had a "guys" weekend last week; MMA fight party Friday night, golfing Saturday and Sunday a 2 1/2 hour drive to St. Pete for the Festival of Speed, this weekend was for my wife. Well, I'll get to it, but while she's out getting her haircut, I'm listening to the Jeff Collection Tape 10 Side A. =-) We do have an elliptical exercise bike in our foyer in a box that needs assembling...this post may be quick without music recap. You'll know if this post ends abruptly that she's home.

Tape 10 Side A
This tape has some nice music recaps with track information plus concert information. These DJ's were masterful, not just vinyl spinners. Always great to hear who's in town. Can someone tell the date again by hearing the concert information? Wow, Martha and the Muffins at the Georgetown Penguin Feather in person. I wish I went to more of these types of in person showings. So, Martha and Simple Minds in concert at the Ontario this Monday night.

Hey, finally Weasel on a Jeff tape. He's only reading a WHFS poster ad, but hey, it's Weasel!
