Thanks It's Uncle Jim and Jugdish for figuring out that the Tape 7 Side A with NR was actually Tape 5 Side B. Now to hunt for the B side of Tape 7! So - b/c of the mix up and the great comments yesterday, I decided to stay up this morning with my dog after his early morning let out and feeding and upload another tape, at least one side - I think (I know) I found a great one. Anything starting out with a two song set from New Order has to be a great tape.
Jeff - these tapes date to the beginning of me really listening to WHFS and having an understanding what I was listening to. Thanks buddy for sharing!

More from Jeff collection
On this tape, Tape 7 side A, I used a noise reduction feature on my audio edit software and while it did a great job reducing the typical hiss and pops found on these older recordings, it also lowered the audio level quite a bit.
When I have time, I'll go back and see if there are other level adjustments to bring up the volume without distortion.
I particularly like both these recordings - I believe all will enjoy them; they are must downloads.

WHFS & Snow cancellations January 23rd, 1987
January 22nd, 1987 approx. 11 PM at night.
Hope this morning tape upload greets some of you like the overnight snow in MD did when we were young. Expecting school and getting sometimes only a dusting but knowing school would be delayed or cancelled b/c of those few impassable roads in the rural parts of the county. Never understood why they just couldn't go school by school or maybe even city by city rather than county by county. Man, sitting there waiting for your county to be called out on radio, "Howard, Prince Georges, Montgomery...". MONTGOMERY!!! NO SCHOOL!!" What to do now is the question...Not enough snow to go sledding. Football? Yeah, that's always fun. But Mom usually would say great day to get some chores done around the house. Really, the best thing about those snow days where being able to go back to sleep for a while longer. Then to have a nice long hot breakfast, one you are not scarfing down as you hear echoing off the walls "You're going to miss the bus!!!"
Ahhhh....relax, go back to a time when your day was derailed in a good way because of some snow.

The first storm struck on January 22 and dropped 12 inches of snow at Baltimore and 11 inches in Hagerstown and Washington, DC. Like other nor'easters, this one was accompanied by strong winds and drifting of snow. The second storm struck just 3 days later on January 25 dropping an additional 9 to 10 inches on top of what had already fallen in the Baltimore and Washington areas and more over southern Maryland and the Lower Eastern Shore. On the morning of the 27th, stations were reporting the following snow depths: Salisbury 18 inches, Easton 17 inches, Baltimore 19 inches, Waldorf 23 inches, Washington DC 18 inches, Frederick 16 inches, Hagerstown 16 inches, and Frostburg 15 inches. Morning temperatures were in the single digits and by the morning of the 28th, below zero. Pikesville was -5F, Bel Air and Hagerstown -4F, Easton -3F, Annapolis -1F, Washington-Dulles Airport was -17F and Martinsburg WV was -7F. Here's that weather report from around 11 PM the night before. Nothing like being glued to your radio in your room waiting for them to say your County. The January 23rd, 1987 date in the Farmers Almanac for the DC area says the low was approx. 20 degrees with 10 inches of snow on the ground at National airport.
Does anyone remember that snow day? How about that week? According the tidbit below it was one heck of a week!

14 new WHFS tapes arrived!
Thanks to Jeff M. from No. VA for shipping his prized possessions. Jeff found my WHFS & other great music blog about a month ago and we have had great dialog via email since. The tapes arrived this week and now I'm setting my sites to this weekend when I can start dubbing the tapes then starting the uploading process.
I've listened to one already tonight while doing other online work and I can tell from this first tape we are all in for a treat. The first tape had Sarah at the helm with some great sets including I would say a rare U.S. radio play of Men Without Hats Safety Dance in what sounded like German.
For all you 102.3 heads the count is 9 102.3 to 5 99.1 tapes. The tapes are all Memorex MRX1 tapes, a mainstay in the 80s.
So, keep checking back over the next few weeks for the Jeff M. collection.

Live from The Lizard Lounge - A side of Tape 1 -
Just finished the second side (A side) of the 1st of ten tapes from Geoff. Nice tape with three, that's three three song sets from Echo & The Bunnymen, Jane's Addiction and The Smithereens. All this during a Station Renovation Weekend live from The Lizard Lounge. The tape starts with a U2 song and ends with almost two from Public Image Ltd including "Rise".
Scattered within these sets is a Dr. Katherine Cruel M.D. skit along with the first 10 callers get a pass to the Gross National Product's Scandal Tour.
So, can anyone date this tape? One clue, when the DJ was talking about what seemed to be mild blackmail, she talked about sending a tape to America's Funniest Videos rather than posting them online.
The three song sets include: Echo & The Bunnymen's Lips Like Sugar, Bed Bugs and Ballyhoo, Never Stop; Jane's Addiction's Stomp, Jane Says and Ben Caught Steelin'; The Smithereens’ Behind the Wall of Sleep, Yesterdays Girl, Only a Memory.
