This blog is dedicated to those over 40 that listened to WHFS back in the 80's. Throughout the 80's I recorded WHFS to cassette, mostly of 99.1 & some 102.3. Included on most recordings are the infamous djs of WHFS, Weasel, Damian, Tom T, Bob, Dave Issing, Neci, Susan, Janet & others.
I also have tapes of Rock over London, & WRVU - 91 Rock, student radio from Vandy in Nashville & even some Rock of the 90's from WAVA Sunday nights.
Enjoy!
While digitizing tapes today, I found one labeled Blues Room Aug 02 complete with Thomas Grooms station breaks. The 0 on the tape is circled a couple times; when listening to the tape, the commercials talk about 1992 so the assumption is the recording is in fact from Aug. 1992. This is the one and only recording of this type that I have from 105.9 WCXR. There are several DJ breaks along with vintage commercials. By the way, the blues spun will move you.
Before I upload the recording, here's an interview I found on YouTube with Thomas Grooms and Randy California.
The streaming audio found on this blog were recorded off the radio with a cassette player in the 80's. The equipment used was not professional and the premise of this site is historical and educational.
If anyone has a issue with a streaming song regarding rights, please let me know and I will remove the song from the stream- please email at naplesgc@gmail.com. If you hear a song on one of these streams that you like, I encourage you to purchase a digital copy of the song from an online store like http://www.itunes.com/. If you need help with a title or group, let me know and I'll see if I can help.

It's named Naplesgc because I didn't quite understand how the blog name worked. I since found out but Naplesgc.blogspot.com is here to stay.
I started this blog to upload some 1980's cassette tapes I have of WHFS, 99.1 on the radio dial, Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington. If you are a fan of the 80's, and I'm not talking the 80's pop alternative, but truly awesome music from Rock-a-Billy, folk, classic oldies, modern alternative, some punk, simply, songs not heard on other radio stations, stay tuned. Be sure to click the link of my online friend wvkayaker for truly awesome rare recordings of WHFS and other music. It may take me a while to upload what I have, but I'll do what I can.
How do I have these tapes? I grew up in Rockville, MD and I'd say listened to WHFS from 1980-1989. In my circle of friends, I was one of the first to listen to alternative music and stayed away from the rap music that was being played loud on many car stereos back in 1983-85. I have these tapes and my records from the day to prove it.
Let's see who I was dating and hanging around when these tapes were made. High School I hung out with Gary, Gus, Mike, Tim and others; Larry, Hugh, Jim, John and more. In the neighborhood was Brian, Charlie, Johnny, Kirsten, Kim, Carla, Mike, Kevin, Gary, Marc and others.
Okay, for old time sake some girls I dated early on would have been Jill Jackson, Yolanda, Dawn came after high school and then Kathy L. before I moved to FL. Did I miss someone? Oh my! I don't know.
My older brother, we'll call him Jim or Jimmy, listened to WHFS when they were on Cordell Ave in Bethesda and must have got me hooked. Some of my tapes have hard cuts since my recording devise was rather crude, and actually at times was recorded through a microphone. Either way, it's what I listened to and now can share some of what I have. There's no editing involved, you're going to hear exactly what's on the tape.
I also have tapes of Rock Over London and WRVU - 91 Rock, student radio from Vanderbilt U. in Nashville and even some Rock of the Nineties from WAVA Sunday nights. I may even upload some of my 1970/80s Baltimore Orioles game tapes.
