3 months later - almost to the day

...and the chapter ends as it began, with hope, anticipation, joy, memories and any other adjective you and think of to insert personally. On March 12, 2010 I received 14 WHFS tapes from Jeff in Va. Since that time, I have a friend in Jeff and the world has 28 sides of incredible historic memories from the one and only, WHFS. It seems longer than 90 + days ago that I received the package I was waiting for; it took Jeff some time to find a box large enough for the 14 tapes plus I think a trip to South America was planned. So, as you all were waiting for the tapes to be uploaded, for awhile, I was waiting for them to be delivered.

Let's all take this time to thank Jeff for saving these tapes all these years, trusting an Internet shadow with his possession. I am proud to have served him well, as well as hopefully doing justice to the recordings, now safe and sound on the Internet. As you may have recently been made aware of over at Camarillo Brillo; links, websites, subscriptions, servers, etc. are all fallible; so while you can, download, download and download. The more these recordings are preserved on hard drives, iPods, iPads, CDs, flash drives, DVDs, etc. the better we will be and the history of WHFS can be restored and replayed for generations to come.

Okay, a bit deep for some recordings off the radio, but hey, that's why we are here.

Enjoy the last of the Jeff M collection here (Tape 6 side A) and here (Tape 6 Side B) Tape six side b has a new link as of 08.06.10

Signing off for now...but not for good.

Totally 80's

Managed to talk my wife into stopping at the local Goodwill after a very nice lunch at Rib City. She took a siesta with the little one in the car while I went and rummaged. I have a moratorium on buying and because of that was not about to venture into the car with bag full of albums, books, cassettes, etc. So, if I can find time in the next couple of days to make my way back there, I will have to remember where I hid a few treasures. One, was a homemade tape labeled Totally 80's - I was like, I need to have this. So, lets hope the still sealed Anthrax State of Euphoria with the hologram, Naked Eyes and Figures on a Beach albums will still be under the shelving where I hid them when I go back. I should have bought the Totally 80's for the buck as wifey is not so concerned with the money spent as much as the room this stuff takes up. I have a storage full plus a garage full of "stuff" that she wants something done with. For another day...

Speaking of Totally 80's - Here are tapes 15 and 16 - vintage 80's WHFS

1. WHFS Jeff Collection Tape 15 Side A

2. WHFS Jeff Collection Tape 15 Side B

3. WHFS Jeff Collection Tape 16 Side A

4. WHFS Jeff Collection Tape 16 Side B

These tapes have a file name that includes "102.3" in them but according to the writing on the tape, are from 99.1. (I cut and pasted without looking until after the fact - it's all good though).

Go to this post for a little information on these four tapes -

As always, come back for comments and reviews

Shhhh...I'm quietly uploading tapes

So, with the next few posts, the Jeff collection of 14 WHFS tapes from pre-1985 will be done. All tapes have been ingested, uploaded and awaiting reviews after being downloaded. Once this project is complete, I'll be seeking other vintage WHFS tapes to be sent my way.

Thanks to all who have helped identify the songs on these tapes, teamwork is an awesome thing.

To get the WHFS Jeff Collection Tape 17 Side A, go here (Fixed -Thanks Jugdish).

To get the WHFS Jeff Collection Tape 17 Side B, go here

Some of these tapes file name has 102.3 in them but may be 99.1, as in tape 17 is 99.1.

Three more tapes to add. I will say, these four tapes burned this weekend were very enjoyable, had lots of DJ's recapping the music and may have been overall my favorite four. Some are WHFS from 99.1, maybe that's why.

Always, please leave your comments. Off to Rib City in Naples.

Let's guess the playlist!

Let's play "Let's guess the playlist!"

In my busy life, our four month old baby, work, photography, trips to Disney, etc. I've decided to not hold back these tapes just b/c I don't have time to listen to them and writeup a playlist. From the looks of the thread on the other post while I was in Disney, you all seem to have fun naming the songs and providing that information to others. These tapes were maybe a year or two before my main listening years, although I was def listening in 82-83, just not paying as much attention in the years post high school '83 -'89.

Here is tape 9 both sides A and B. I haven't listened to these since I ripped them and I probably didn't listen to the whole tape.

Let's get some feedback on these tapes.

What's behind curtain # 9A?

What's behind curtain # 9B?

Supposed to be cleaning gararge..

So, it's Saturday and since I had a "guys" weekend last week; MMA fight party Friday night, golfing Saturday and Sunday a 2 1/2 hour drive to St. Pete for the Festival of Speed, this weekend was for my wife. Well, I'll get to it, but while she's out getting her haircut, I'm listening to the Jeff Collection Tape 10 Side A. =-) We do have an elliptical exercise bike in our foyer in a box that needs assembling...this post may be quick without music recap. You'll know if this post ends abruptly that she's home.

Tape 10 Side A
This tape has some nice music recaps with track information plus concert information. These DJ's were masterful, not just vinyl spinners. Always great to hear who's in town. Can someone tell the date again by hearing the concert information? Wow, Martha and the Muffins at the Georgetown Penguin Feather in person. I wish I went to more of these types of in person showings. So, Martha and Simple Minds in concert at the Ontario this Monday night.

Hey, finally Weasel on a Jeff tape. He's only reading a WHFS poster ad, but hey, it's Weasel!

Tape 10 Side B

Aetp 11 Eisd A - Onyje!

Aetp 11 Eisd A - Late March, 1983

Here's a link to an article coming out this Sunday in the Washington Post about the history of the 930 club - You'll see the connection when you here one of the commercials on the tape - that's how I also determined the date of the tape.

Aetp 11 Eisd A Onyje!
Captain Beefheart - Ice Cream for Crow
Music recap by Milo (Some great songs recaped but not on tape).
The Clash - Police and Thieves
The tape at this point, about 10 minutes in, takes a noise level dive and lasts for about 15 minutes. It picks up fine after and the rest of the tape is good).
I'm getting help from the owner of these tapes -Thanks Jeff for the music recap!
1.The AuPairs- Shakedown
2. Rank and File- Amanda Ruth
3. The Individuals-My Three Sons
4. The Softboys-Sandra's having her brain out
5. The Doors-Cars Hiss By My Window
6. The Fall-Repetition
7. The Dream Syndicate-That's what you always say
8. The Velvet Monkeys-Evelyn Marble
9. Lydia Lunch- 3X3

Would love to have this on tape - Milo was saying how they are going to play a tape of a naration of Something Wicked this Way Comes by Orsen Welles later that night at 11:30 PM.

Ptae 11 Dise B I epho uyo ikel ti!
Psychedelic Furs - Into like a Train
Bob "Here" recapping - Sounds like an awesome set recapped but not on tape - listen for it).

As always, please come back and leave comments.

"B" sides always get a bad rap...

Remember on those 45's where the side B might as well have not even been there? Or, at least that what's was thought, being that the main cut on side "A"was what was being promoted by the record label. I'd love to hear a compilation of just "B" sides some day and see if it was truly only about promotion or if the "B" side songs are really just that bad, or, should I say, just not as good as side A. So, a simple search on my premise has returned just that compilation. (Seems as though this compilation is of more recent mostly 90's and 00's "B" sides). Can anyone name some "B" sides that turned out to be hits? Maybe just a "B" side you liked?

Any comments on "B" side successes? The Wiki take on "B" sides -

I'll start first, Side B of the Jeff Collection, Tape 12!

Proudly get Side B of Tape 12 here and enjoy!

July 4th, 1983 (Does anyone remember what they were doing on July 4th 1983?)
Here Today- Whistle in the Yard (Loved this song way back then and still today!)
UPI News (Great to hear the old news and eerie to hear how similar to today.)
Depeche Mode - Tora Tora Tora
New Order - Age of Consent
Flag of Convenience - Life on the Telephone
Tears for Fears - Change
DJ music recap

Thanks Jeff for the rest of these artists and song titles!
Pete Shelley - If You Ask Me (I won't say no)
Pete Shelley - Millions of People (no one like you)
David Bowie - Richochet
Nona Hendryx - Transformation

P.S. Please don't get used to these early morning postings. I am seriously not a morning person but since my 16 year old dog Winston with stage 4 renal failure feels the need to go out then eat his first meal of the day at 5AM, so here I am. I'm glad I have something to do though. Today I'm finishing up earlier so I can now get some more shut eye b/4 work.

Early morning mixup

Thanks It's Uncle Jim and Jugdish for figuring out that the Tape 7 Side A with NR was actually Tape 5 Side B. Now to hunt for the B side of Tape 7! So - b/c of the mix up and the great comments yesterday, I decided to stay up this morning with my dog after his early morning let out and feeding and upload another tape, at least one side - I think (I know) I found a great one. Anything starting out with a two song set from New Order has to be a great tape.

Jeff - these tapes date to the beginning of me really listening to WHFS and having an understanding what I was listening to. Thanks buddy for sharing!

For those of you like me with "the 80's" running through there veins, check out this site - http://www.inthe80s.com/

Tape probably from June 1983
So, here we have Jeff collection Tape 12 Side A - perhaps one of my favorites as I listen more carfully when I post, rather than when I rip - many times I leave the tape deck and the computer to do it's thing and come back later to edit the tape on the computer.

Jeff Collection Tape 12 Side A
Starts off in the middle of Temptation

New Order - Temptation
New Order - Blue Monday
This tape has the first known "pause bump" I've heard on the Jeff Collection tapes.
It's not bad but it cuts into a "Rock against Reagan" tour commercial. Hey Jeff - did you realize back then you were taking a stand against those against Reagan by pausing the tape? Ha! It goes into Ring of Fire by Wall of Voodoo and continues with an awesome WHFS set - so, not so bad.
Wall of Voodoo - Ring of Fire
Rubber Rodeo - Slipping Away
Fun Boy Three - Murder She Said
XTC - Sergeant Rock (Is going to help me)
Made for TV - So Afraid of the Russians
OMD - This is Helena
Susan recapping the music
"The National Aquarium - Come touch us now" (listen close to her quick one syllable comment after reading this commercial)
DAF - (Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft)
New Order - Age of Consent

Come back for side B tomorrow

As always, please come back and leave comments.

More from Jeff collection

On this tape, Tape 7 side A, I used a noise reduction feature on my audio edit software and while it did a great job reducing the typical hiss and pops found on these older recordings, it also lowered the audio level quite a bit.

When I have time, I'll go back and see if there are other level adjustments to bring up the volume without distortion.

I particularly like both these recordings - I believe all will enjoy them; they are must downloads.

Tape 7 Side A without Noise Reduction

Flipper - Life (The only thing worth living for)

Joy Division - Dead Souls

Wire - Blessed State

The Stranglers - Vietnamerica

Music recap - (Is this Dave or Dj Milo?)

Bill Nelson - A Private View

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Iconic Storage

The Specials - Ghost Town

Jacob Miller - Once Upon a Time

Augustus Pablo - Herbal Weed Dub

Creation Rebel - Rebel Party

Turns out REM was to be in the studio for an interview and they were late. Anyone remember this interview or perhaps when they would have been in concert around this time?

Tape 7 Side A with Noise Reduction (Thanks Uncle Jim & Jugdish for figuring this out- this tape is Tape 5 Side B from the Early Morning Upload).

Okay, turns out the download with Noise Reduction on it is actually another tape which I'll have to investigate - so, download both. I'll tell you, this tape is also great and actually very clean audio.

Tracks -

Gang of Four - Damaged Goods

Family Fodder - Symbols (From the album Monkey Banana Kitchen)

Orchestre Rouge - Red Orange and Blue

The Clash - Straight to Hell

Music Recap by Sarah

The Suburbs - Flag of Convenience

The Suburbs - Waiting

DEVO - Out of Sync

Pete Shelly - Telephone Operator

Bill Nelson - UHF

Peter Gabriel - Perspective

Don't forget to download both of these are they are different recordings. Please post your feelings on if you like with NR or not. If the audio level is okay - I may add the NR to other tapes. (Turns out everyone likes the NR off and I agree).

As always, please come back and leave comments.

Welcome Peggy!

Peggy from my high school posted the new 94.7 'HFS site on Facebook then headed here to check out my blog. Cool.

So, for Peggy, I thought I would add a 99.1 tape next.

99.1 Tape 18 side A - Get it here!
I'm listening to this tape now and it's got more hiss than I like but when I reduce it, the audio level suffers. There is a classic concert calendar as read by Sarah.

Does anyone know the time frame when Mark and Diane were Djs at the same time Sarah was?

Don't forget- if you download, leave a comment and after listening to it a review of the tape would be great as well.

WHFS & Snow cancellations January 23rd, 1987

January 22nd, 1987 approx. 11 PM at night.

Hope this morning tape upload greets some of you like the overnight snow in MD did when we were young. Expecting school and getting sometimes only a dusting but knowing school would be delayed or cancelled b/c of those few impassable roads in the rural parts of the county. Never understood why they just couldn't go school by school or maybe even city by city rather than county by county. Man, sitting there waiting for your county to be called out on radio, "Howard, Prince Georges, Montgomery...". MONTGOMERY!!! NO SCHOOL!!" What to do now is the question...Not enough snow to go sledding. Football? Yeah, that's always fun. But Mom usually would say great day to get some chores done around the house. Really, the best thing about those snow days where being able to go back to sleep for a while longer. Then to have a nice long hot breakfast, one you are not scarfing down as you hear echoing off the walls "You're going to miss the bus!!!"

Ahhhh....relax, go back to a time when your day was derailed in a good way because of some snow.

I didn't know WHFS also did school closing announcements. Did anyone listen to 'HFS in high school? I would have tuned into 105.5 or 107 back then while living in College Gardens in Rockville.

Songs prior to the weather report are from Jan. 22nd 1987:

Weather report

Here's that weather report from around 11 PM the night before. Nothing like being glued to your radio in your room waiting for them to say your County.  The January 23rd, 1987 date in the Farmers Almanac for the DC area says the low was approx. 20 degrees with 10 inches of snow on the ground  at National airport.

Does anyone remember that snow day? How about that week? According the tidbit  below it was one heck of a week!

Here's an interesting tidbit from NOAA.gov site.

MARYLAND'S HISTORIC WINTER EXTREMES:
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/lwx/Historic_Events/md-winter.html

January 22-28 1987:   Two significant snowstorms struck within 3 days of each other and were followed by a cold wave that dropped temperatures below zero in some areas. The first storm struck on January 22 and dropped 12 inches of snow at Baltimore and 11 inches in Hagerstown and Washington, DC. Like other nor'easters, this one was accompanied by strong winds and drifting of snow. The second storm struck just 3 days later on January 25 dropping an additional 9 to 10 inches on top of what had already fallen in the Baltimore and Washington areas and more over southern Maryland and the Lower Eastern Shore. On the morning of the 27th, stations were reporting the following snow depths: Salisbury 18 inches, Easton 17 inches, Baltimore 19 inches, Waldorf  23 inches, Washington DC 18 inches, Frederick 16 inches, Hagerstown 16 inches, and Frostburg 15 inches. Morning temperatures were in the single digits and by the morning of the 28th, below zero. Pikesville was -5F, Bel Air and Hagerstown -4F, Easton -3F, Annapolis -1F, Washington-Dulles Airport was -17F and Martinsburg WV was -7F. A third snowstorm hit on February 22 dropping another 10 inches on Washington and Baltimore.Hagerstown reported 13 inches and thunder-snow. Power lines and trees were damaged by the weight of the heavy wet snow.

Here's the entire tape with the songs documented above.

Leaving this information below up so I can find that tape and figure why I have some mixed information.
